تدور أحداث الرواية حول شاب سعودي عاش في مجتمعه، ثم سافر لإكمال دراسته خارج البلاد، ليعود إلى مجتمعه بنظرة مختلفة، جعلته لا ينظر سوى للجانب السلبي من مجتمعه"... يعشق غازي مدينته التي يعانقها كل يوم، ويقسم ألا يخونها بإنتقاله للعيش بين ثنايا أخرى.
فجدّة تتعثر بسمعة جرأة فتياتها لمجرد أن لديهن بصيصاً من الحرية، هي مدينة يتمكن فيها من التعرف على ملامح وجوه الفتيات المتشحات بالسواد التقليدي دون أن يوارين إبتسامتهنّ أو بريق أعينهن.
يحقد على الرجال التقليدين القادمين من مدن أخرى بحثاً عن سبي جديد أو إمرأة تختارهم يرضاها تستحيل العملية إلى مطاردة تثير الرعب في نفوسهن، يشعر، في كل صيف، بالغيرة على بنات مدينته وكأنهن نساؤه فقط، لا بد له هو فقط من الحصول على حقّه في النظر إليهن، يتمنى لو تستحيل مدينته إلى حصن يمنع فيه وفود أي رجل سواه".
وفي هذا العمل لا تكتفي الروائية بتقديم نموذجاً واحداً يعكس أيديولوجيا مجتمعها، بل تتجاوز ذلك إلى صقل شخصيات أنثوية متمردة يضمها العمل الروائي تعكس ذلك الصراع بين البنى التقليدية، وبين نسائم الجديد الوافد وتأثيراته على قيم المجتمع السعودي حيث تتسلل "نداء أبو علي" إلى داخل الشخصيات وترصد أفكارها ومشاعرها وخواطرها وكذلك تحوّلها وتسرد بلغة الواقع، غير متخفية وراء العبارات، وهذا ما يضفي على عملها صدقية وعمق في معالجة ظواهر المجتمع بسلبياته وإيجابياته...
