ظهر كتاب "الأغاني" لأبى الفرج الأصفهاني في وقت لم يكن فيه من مؤلفات في النقد المتخصص إلا في النادر، فضم الكتاب أغلب الروايات القديمة والآراء في "الشعر والشعراء" كما أنه تبنى نظرية المدرسة البغدادية التي تنظر إلى الشعر على أساس القيم الذاتية للفنان بغض النظر عن الأديب أو الشاعر. والذي أكده من قبل الجاحظ وابن قتيبة والصولي.
وتمكن أبو الفرج، كما يبدو من أن يرسخ هذا الاتجاه فيما تلا في كتب أدبية كما يظهر في "وساطه الحرجاني" و"موازنة" الأيدي. وفاق من جاء بعده من نقاد الجمال الأدبي بأن وسع منهج الجاحظ في تحقيق النصوص والنظر في تسلسلها ونسبتها وشرحها وتوضيحها، وأن سعة الكتاب ساعدته على الاقتباس الكثير واختيار الجيد مما جعل من كتابه مرجعاً مهماً لعدد كبير من الشعراء وأن طبيعة أبي الفرج في التأليف ساعدته على تصيد نوادر الأخبار وطرائف الأنباء مما جعل كتابه مرجعاً فريداً لسير الشعراء وغريب أطوارهم ومضحكات عاداتهم. ومن خلال نصوصه يستطيع القارئ تنسم طبيعة الحضارة الإسلامية وعادات أهلها وملابسهم وتقاليدهم وحياتهم التي كانوا يحيونها مما جعل كتاب الأغاني خزانة للحضارة الإسلامية في جميع أطوارها.
وفي هذا الكتاب بحوث نشرت حول كتاب الأغاني، ومنهج مؤلفه وتكّون بمجموعها صورة هذا الكتاب الذي يعتبر أضخم تراث أدبي موروث في تاريخ الأدب العربي، توجه اهتمام الباحث في تلك البحوث إلى بيان منهج الكاتب أكثر مما توجه اهتمامه إلى المؤلف وحياته. لأن كتب التاريخ تغني القارئ عن حياة أبي الفرج ودراسته وشيوخه، ولكن هذه الكتب لم تترك شيئاً عن كتاب الأغاني ومصادره وأسانيده والمنهج الذي اتبعه مؤلفه فيه. وهذا ما حاول الباحث الكشف عنه في هذا الكتاب.
