يسعى الباحث في هذا الكتاب لتناول موضوع الأزمة التي يواجهها المشروع الإسلامي بوصفه مشروعاً حضارياً قادراً أن يحل مشكلة الإنسانية انطلاقاً من مبدأ الشمولية لرسالة الإسلام الأزلية الأبدية. فالباحث يقرر وجود أزمة، والأزمة إحساس شامل يستفز عقول الباحثين والمفكرين مع كل شارق، في محاولة لإيجاد مخرج منها مهما كانت هذه المحاولة، على أن مجرد الإحساس بالأزمة لا يعني بداية حلها، وإن كان يعني وعياً ربما يقود إلى تقديم مشروع جزئي قد يسهم في حل جزء من أسباب هذه الأزمة.
ويظل حل جميع أسبابها عملاً شمولياً يبدأ من شمولية المعرفة إلى شمولية الإرادة والأداة: يطرح الباحث الموضوع في شكل أزمة تأخذ أبعادها من الجذور التاريخية، فحل أزمة الإنسان العربي المسلم، والإنسان المسلم، والمستضعف عموماً لا يمكن أن تتم من خلال محاكاة النموذج الغربي، أي من خلال أخذ العلاج من المرض ذاته. فالمستضعف لا يمكن أن يحل مشكلته من خلال تبني برنامج المستكبر، لأن هذا التبني لن يكون إلا ذيلية وتبعية لا تحل المشكلة بل تزيدها تعقيداً.
لقد حاول الباحث أن يعرض الأزمة في إطارها التاريخي والإنساني ومن هنا يأتي تقسيم البحث إلى أبوابه الثلاثة. فالباب الأول جاء بعنوان (التاريخ والمدنية) تناول المؤلف من خلاله بالتحليل ثلاثة مواضيع: التاريخ في نظر المؤرخين العرب، المؤرخون والمفكرون الأوروبيون والتاريخ، فلسفة التاريخ والمدنية. وفي الباب الثاني الذي جاء تحت عنوان مشاريع تاريخية للمدنية والحضارة تناول الباحث بالتحليل: مشروع أفلاطون "الجمهورية" مشروع ابن خلدون "المقدمة" مشروع ميكافيللي "المطارحات"، "الأمير" مشروع جان جاك روسو "العقلاجتماعي". ويأتي الباب الثالث نتاجاً لما تم طرحه في البابين الأول والثاني، حيث يحلل الباحث جذور أزمة المشروع الإسلامي التاريخية من خلال استعراض حدثي السقيفة، وصفين، وكذلك التيارات الفكرية والمذهبية التي برزت في هذه الفترة.
