يمثل هذا المعجم واحة مثمرة وثمارها هي قراءات محمود محمد شاكر المتعددة لنصوص المتقدمين التي تمثل عالماً بديعاً متفرداً. يفتح محمود شاكر بوابات سني الزمن المتراكمة المرتجة، بأسلوب سلسٍ مبهر، فيأتي بأم اللفظ وبيانه (كما ورد في معاجم اللغة)، مضيفاً إليه حرفاً أو كلمة، فيكتسي المعنى ليوساً جديداً، ونمطاً مختلفاً. فيمسّ القارئ أن الكلمة له، تفجرت بدءاً أضاةً من بين يديه. أو قد يأتي بيان الألفاظ كما نمّ عنه النص وقال أصحابه... فيأتي ببلاغتين: يقرن بيان الكلام المكتوب ببيان كلامه، أو قد يجمع متفرق المعاني، أو يقيد الأوابد وندودَ نفارِ صعاب الشوارد، فينتظم الحس والعقل والعلم في قرآن، ويجتمع التاريخ والأدب والنقد والفراسة في مضمار. وبذلك يكون محمود محمد شاكر قد قام ببيان غوامض قلم الغابرين من خلال شرح ذكي لنصوص العربية وكأن أعطى صورة جديدة وحيّة لجوهر التراث، ونقله من الجمود إلى الحركة، جمّعت الأزمنة، وأكملت الصور برفق بديع فريد، ومن خلال جهده هذا كان هناك بعث للتراث اللغوي والدين وعلوم العربية وعلوم الإسلام، لتتواصل بذلك عبقرية الأزمنة الأول بكل طاقاتها، فتضيغ وجوداً مميزاً، يبدأ نهضة صحيحة، تبدأ من حيث ينبغي البدء. وأخيراً فإن هذا المعجم إنما لحمته قراء محمود محمد شاكر لكتب العربية ونصوصها، وسداه مجموع مقالاته المختلفة، مرتباً ترتيباً معجمياً لسهولة الدرس والمراجعة، أضاف إليه واضعه نتفاً من نصوص كتب الأدب، وذلك بغية تقديم المزيد من الشرح والبيان أغفلت المعاجم جلّه، أو كادت.
