يدرس هذا الكتاب الحكمة العملية عند "يحيى بن عدي" في كتابه "تهذيب الأخلاق" وجاءت الدراسة من إعداد الأستاذ "عاطف خليل الحكيم" من لبنان.
يناقش هذا الكتاب مسألة الأخلاق عند الفلاسفة فمنهم من وضعها في خانة العلوم العملية، ومنهم من وضعها في خانة العلوم النظرية، وهنا يتساءل الباحث كيف للإنسان الحدث أن يبادل الناس الفضائل؟ وكيف تمييز بين الفضائل الحسنة والأخرى الرديئة؟ ولماذا كتب أرسطو في الأخلاق ووضع منهجاً لها؟...
الجواب على هذا السؤال نجده في هذه الدراسة التي تسلط الأضواء على معارضة فيلسوفنا "يحيى بن عدي" رأي أرسطو فقال متحدثاً عن تقوية النفس الناطقة بواسطة الأخلاق "وتقوية هذه النفس إنما تكون بالعلوم العقلية، ودرس كتب الأخلاق والسياسة، وأيضاً، تكتسب الأخلاق الحسنة بمجالسة الزهاد والرهبان والنسّاك وأهل الورع والواعظين، ويلازم مجالس الرؤساء وأهل العلم".
وهذا يعني أن أرسطو يرى في الأخلاق علماً نظرياً بحتاً، أما "يحيى بن عدي" فاعتبر الأخلاق متأخرة على الإنسان، وبالتالي فهي علم نظري وعملي في آن معاً، وأيضاً هي غير خالدة، فانية تتجدد في الزمان والمكان.
تقسم هذه الدراسة إلى ثلاثة أبواب وفصول متعددة تبحث في ماهية الأخلاق والنفس البشرية وبلوغها الكمال، مع مناقشة مستفيضة لآراء عدد كبير من الفلاسفة وعلماء الدين وكذلك المفكرون من تيارات مختلفة مرفقة بدراسة هامة لكتاب "تهذيب الأخلاق" لــ"يحيى بن عدي" الذي ارتفعت فيه فلسفة الأخلاق فوق أركان ثلاثة ناقشها المؤلف وهي: الإنسان، المحبة، وإشكالية الواجب...
