على قبر كزنتزاكيس بهراكليون عاصمة كريت نحتت العبارات التالية: "لا أطمع في شيء... لا أخاف من شيء... أنا حر". كتاب "تصوف" الذي يعود تخطيطه الاوليّ الى العام 1914، ربما مثل الرؤيا الأساسية لكزنتزاكيس الشاعر والمفكر معاً. حينها كان كزنتزاكيس في الثلاثين من عمره، وكان في زيارة للجبل المقدس "آيوس أوروس" أما الصياغة النهائية للكتاب فتمت في العاصمة الالمانية برلين ما بين كانون الاول/ديسمبر عام 1922 ونيسان/ أبريل 1923، لكن الكتاب لم ير النور إلا في عام 1927.
"تصوف" هو المخطط الأولي لمسيرة الاكتشافات الموعودة، وهو البذرة التي نبتت في مؤلفاته الروائية والشعرية اللاحقة، لذلك يمكن اعتبار هذا الكتاب "دليلا" يقود القارئ عبر عوالم كزنتزاكيس الروائية، وفي الوقت نفسه يمكن النظر اليه كمحطة اساسية لقياس تطوره اللاحق.
