يرى بعض أصحاب النظر في الأدب، أن أبا نواس وأبا العتاهيةصنوان، فدخيلة نفسيهما واحدة، وإن اختلف الإهاب. كلاهما يعاني عقدة الخوف من الموت: بين عيني كل حي... علم الموت يلوح. الفرق بين الشاعرين: أن اولههما أرهق رحلة عمره بالمجانة والخمر، و ثانيهما أهلك درب الحياة بالزهادة و الذكر. و أما ما يحيق بهما، وما يترصد لهما، وراء كل ثنية، وحيال كل منعطف، فهو واحد لا يريم، إنه ريب المنون. أبو العلاء المعري شبيه صاحبيه هذين، في أمر، هو أنه مثلهما، مزق الليلي و حطم الأيام، و استخف بالعيش و زادراه، لكن، لا على طريقة ابي نواس في مجونه، ولا على نسق أبي العتاهية، في زهده، بل على مذهب أبي العلاء الخاص، وهو الثورة المدمرة، الثورة على المجتمع، و على كل ما تواضع عليه الناس، و تسليط سيف النقد اللاذع على المجود والعدم، و على الأفكار والقيم. إعصار ثار في المعرة، و لكن مداه الأرض و السماء وما بينهما. هذا الكتاب يساهم في تيسير الوصول إلى المعرفة، و تنوير البرزخ الأبدي، برزخ التواصل بين الماضي والحاضر، لاستشراف مطالع المستقبل. و يضيئ من الناحية الفنية خصائص الشاعر، وأهم طرائقه في التعبير، ومعالم دوره في إغناء تراثنا الأدبي و الحضاري.
