حدثت الرحلة التنوخية في الفترة الواقعة ما بين أواخر شوال 1332ه / 1914م ونهاية عام 1336ه / 1918م تقريباً. وكان خط سيره باختصار كالآتي:
حلب – جبل الشيخ – البلقاء – الهزيم – بادية شرق الأردن – قريّات الملح – وادي السرحان – دومة الجندل – سُكاكا – البصرة – مكة المكرمة – القاهرة – دمشق.
وهذه الرحلة كان يكتبها المؤلف من ذاكرته، أي لم يكتبها في أثناء تنقلاته، والدليل أنه يكتبها بصيغة الماضي، ويكتب بعض الأحداث المستقبلية في رحلته، وينقل من المصادر والمراجع ويستشهد بها برقم الصفحة، وغير ذلك من الأدلة.
وتعتبر هذه الرحلة من نوادر الرحلات، وأول من لفت الإنتباه إليها الدكتور يحي عبد الرؤوف جبر، من الأردن، فجمعها وحققها عام 1405ه / 1985م.
ولأهمية هذه الرحلة، عمل الأستاذ فائز الرويلي على تحقيقها ودراستها وخاصة لأنها تتعلق بقبيلة الرّولة، وبإمارة إبن شعلان بالجوف، حيث يعد عز الدين التنوخي من أوائل من كتب تفصيلات تاريخ إمارة إبن شعلان بالجوف بعد الرحّالة موسيل.
