يحوي الحج في الإسلام قيماً علياً ومفاهيم كبرى باعتباره من القواعد والأسس التي بني عليها الإسلام، فالتوحيد الذي هو جوهر الدين والإسلام، يتجلى في أعمال الحج وأوراده، ولذا جعل الله تعالى تركه عمداً بمثابة الكفر حيث يقول: (ولله على الناس حج البيت من استطاع إليه سبيلا، ومن كفر فإن الله غني عن العلمين).
إذن لا شك في أن الحج هو أحد أكبر الفرائض الإسلامية، وأعظم شعائر الدين، ومن أفضل الأعمال التي يراد بها التقرب إلى الله تعالى، وتركه مع توافر الشروط للمكلف يعتبر كبيرة من الكبائر، ومع أن الحج يبدو وكأنه عبادة كسائر العبادات الأخرى، إلا أن فيها الكثير من الحكمة والفوائد على صعيد الفرد والمجتمع، وعلى ضوء هذا تأتي هذه الدراسة لتبيين هذه العبادة بأشكالها وأبعادها الاجتماعية والثقافية والاقتصادية والسياسية، استناداً إلى كتاب الله والسنة النبوية الشريفة، وأحاديث أئمة أهل البيت مستشهدة بأقوال الحكماء والعلماء وأصحاب الفكر والرأي.
