يتعرض هذا الكتاب لمنظومة ابن الحاجب في العروض والقوافي المسماة "المقصد الجليل في علم الخليل" بالشرح والتوضيح، لما تحتويه من قواعدد العلمين، ولما تنطوي عليه من مقاصد الفنيين. وقد اعتمد الإسنوي في شرحه هذا على خبرة اكتسبها من ممارسة هذين العلمين درساً وتدريساً –على حد تعبير- بيد أنه ميَز شرحه من ألفاظ هذا النظم، وهو كثير جداً متوقف على تمكن في علم العربية. والثاني: ضبط ما يخشى تصحيفه من الألفاظ الواقعة في الأبيات التي استشهد بها الناظم، وتفسير معاني تلك الألفاظ".
وعلى هذا تعد القصيدة المسماة بالمقصد الجليل في علم الخليل التي نظمها الأستاذ جمال الدين ابي عمرو عثمان ابن الحتجب في علم العروض والقوافي على بحر البسيط من أصنع التصاميف وأبدعها، وأنفع التواليف وأجمعها، ففيها عمل الأسنوي على شرح الأبيات الأولى التي تتعرض لمفهوم العروض، وأصل الأجزاء في الشعر، ومكونات هذه الأجزاء من أسباب وأوتاد وفواصل، وما ينتج عنها من الأجزاء الثواني وهي التفيلات، وكيفية الوزن بها، وبين التفاعل الفرعية كتفرع فاعلاتن ومستفعلن عن مفاعيلن.. الخ وأوضح عدد البحور والأعاريض والضروب وأسماء البحور، وشرح أسماء الدوائر وما تحتويه كل دائرة، وخرج من كل ذلك كله إلى بيان مفهوم التصريح والتقفية والإصمات والخزم.. وانتهى إلى الأبيات التي يشرح فيها الناظم كيفية اصطلاحه في وضع المقاصد داخل القصيدة ليكون عوناً علة الفهم لدى الدارسين...
