الطفولة مرحلة قصيرة من حياة الإنسان لكنها في غاية الأهمية إذ فيها يدخل الطفل عالم الكتب وتتأصل فيه عادة القراءة والمطالعة التي يتعرف من خلالها إلى نفسه ومحيطه. فإذا تعوّد في سن مبكرة أن يرتاح ويطمئن إلى الكتابة تتكون عنده هواية المطالعة، ويتحسس فوائدها التي لا تقتصر على المتعة والتسلية لكنها إلى جانب ذلك تثير فكر القارئ وتجعله اكثر تفهما للحياة.
وتلعب مكتبة الأطفال دوراً فعالاً في توفير الكتب للأطفال أينما كانوا وبالتالي رفع مستوى حياتهم الفكرية، وعندما يعتاد الأطفال ارتياد المكتبة في سنن مبكرة فإنهم سيكتشفون أن المكتبة ليست مكاناً لاكتساب المعرفة بشكل دائم وحسب، بل إنها مجال لقاء وتسلية، فالمكتبة عدا تقديمها الكتب المتوافرة، والصادرة حديثاً، تؤمن لهم نشاطات تثقيفية وخدمات تعليمية ولقاءات إنسانية مفيدة.
وفي هذا البحث يركز المؤلف على أهمية الكتاب وعلى الدور الذي تلعبه المطالعة في نمو الطفل المتكامل، محاولاً بالتالي توضيح الخطوات الأساسية المتبعة لإنشاء مكتبات وتنظيم حديثة للأطفال عامة كانت أم مدرسية، ضمن إطار مبسط وسهل التطبيق، كما شدد على الدور الذي تقوم به المعلمة في مساندة أمينة المكتبة لتوسيع آفاق الأطفال الثقافية وحثهم على اعتماد الكتب كمصدر معرفة وتسلية معاً.
