يمثل هذا الكتاب أول وصف أجنبي مفصّل عن الشرق الإسلامي في القرن السابع عشر. وصاحب الرحلة من أوائل الرحّالة الذين زاروا العراق وبلاد فارس في تلك المرحلة، وبذلوا جهوداً حثيثةً في إقامة تحالف إنكليزي ـ فارسي ضد الدولة العثمانية، وتمثل رحلته أول سفارة رسمية إنكليزية من الملك شارل الأول إلى الشاه عباس الصفوي (1571-1628).
لكن شهرة هذا الكتاب لا تقتصر على ذلك فحسب، وإنما في المعلومات التاريخية المهمة التي وردت فيها عن الاحتلال الفارسي لمدينة بغداد في سنة (1623) وعن برج بابل الأسطوري، وعن الجنة الأرضية والاحتمالات التي قيلت بشأن موقعها، وعن مدينة شوشان وأصل تسميتها، وغير ذلك من التفاصيل والمعلومات التاريخية.
ولذلك، فإن كتاب رحلة توماس هربرت يمثل في أكثر من ناحية، حالة استشراق مبكرة. وعلى الرغم من الأخطاء التاريخية والتحيز الواردة بين ثناياه، إلا أنه يكشف أن صاحب الرحلة شخص واسع الاطلاع، عميق التفكير، لكنه متأثر بعقلية عصره.
ولابد من الإشارة هنا إلى أن الرحّالة تحدث عن تاريخ العراق وشخصياته ومدنه من وجهة نظر فارسية، ويبدو أنه كان متأثرا بالثقافة التي اكتسبها عن العراق وتاريخه من بلاد فارس، التي كان في مهمة لإقامة علاقات متبادلة معها.
