إن الدعاء هو أعلى أنواع العبادة وأرفعها وأشرفها ولذلك دليل في القرآن والسنة. وترك دعاء الرب هو استكبار، ولا أقبح من هذا الاستكبار. وكيف نستكبر العبد عن ذلك والله هو خالقه ورازقه وموجده من العدم.
وهذا الكتاب صنفه الإمام الشوكاني في الأحاديث الواردة في الدعاء وفضله ومن ثم ورد طائفة من الأدعية المختارة في أحوال عديدة وهي التي حثّ الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم عليها. قد جاء الكتاب ضمن عشرة أبواب وقد كانت مواضيعها على التوالي: 1-في فضل الذكر والدعاء والصلاة والسلام على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وآداب ذلك، 2-في أوقات الإجابة، وأحوالها، وأماكنه، 3-فيما يقال في الصباح والمساء، 4-فيما يتعلق بالظهور، والمسجد والآذان، 5-فيما يتعلق بالأكل والشرب، 6-فيما يتعلق بالأمور العلوية، كسحاب، ورعد، مطر، وهلال، وريح وقمر، 7-فيما يتعلق بالشخص من أمور مختلفات باختلاف الأحوال، 8-فيما يهم من عوارض وآفات في الحياة إلى الممات، 9-في ذكر ورد فضله ولم يخص وقتاً من الأوقات واستغفار يمحو الخطيئات في فضل القرآن العظيم، وسور منه وآيات، 10-في أدعية صحّت عنه صلى الله عليه وسلم مطلقات غير مقيدات.
