كان الشعر وما زال ديوان العرب، وإحدى مفاحز اللغة العربية، فهو السبب في حفظ الكثير من الوقائع، والجمل في المعاني، والمميز من المواعظ، وحين ضعفت السليقة العربية، حافظ الناس على الموزون المقفى في شعرهم تمسكاً ومحافظة بما كنا عليه، وحتى أن الكثير من العلوم سبكت في منظومات ليسهل على الناس وعلى الأخص منهم الطلاب حفظها وتداولها. ومن النظم باب واسع جداً مشى به ناظموه على ما كان معروفاً قديماً بالرجز، وحداء الركبان، والخفيف في العروض مما يسهل فيه الفناء.
وقد حلت هذه محل الكثير من أغاني المجون، أو الكلام الذي لا فائدة فيه، ودخل في بعضها من المعاني ما لا يجوز اعتقاده كما في "بردة البوصيري". وهذه القصيدة التي نقلب صفحاتها هي من نظم الشيخ أحمد بن عبد القادر الحفظي" وهي مما كان متداولاً في الحجاز وعسير ونجد واليمن وكان المؤلف قد نظمها ليتناشدها عامة الناس في الترغيب والحث على قيام الليل، وقد طبعت لأول مرة سنة 1346 بأمر من سلطان المسلمين الإمام "عبد العزيز بن عبد الرحمن آل سعود". وهذه هي الطبعة الثانية تصدر الآن والهدف منها نشر هذا التراث القديم بين يدي المطلعين وكذلك لاطلاع القراء على ما بها من جميل المعاني ومتانة النظم.
