"مهزلة الأخطاء" ملهاة شكسبيرية بامتياز تدور أحداثها في العهد الروماني بين مدينتي أفسس الرومانية وسرقوسة في جزيرة صقلية، وصفها النقاد بأنها مسرحية (مواقف) ومفارقات، وفيها ابتعد سكشبير عن التغلغل في أعماق الشخصيات كعادته في بقية مسرحياته، فأحداثها تتولد عن مصادفات تعيشها الشخصيات في جوَ من التوتر والحذر الشديد.
وفي المسرحية، تقع حادثة بين تجار مدينتي سرقوسة وأفسس فتقوم أحداث دامية بينهما يتم على اثرها منع التعاطي فيما بين المدينتين المتعاديتين ويكثر الشقاق بينهما وتصدر قرارات جائزة، (فكل رجل مولود في أفسس يظهر في طرقات سرقوسة وأسواقها، وكل رجل من هذه المدينة الأخيرة يتجاوز خليج أفسس، يكون نصيبه الموت الزؤام! ومصادرة أرزاقه لصالح الدوق إلا إذا قدَم ألف دينار فدية لإعفائه من العقاب)، (ولسوء حظ تاجر من تجار سرقوسة (أجايون) فإنه ما أن تطأ قدميه أرض مدينة أفسس حتى يحكم عليه بالإعدام بموجب القانون أعلاه ولكنه قبل أن ينفذ فيه الحكم يسأل عن السبب الذي جعله يقدم على هذه المغامرة المميتة...) وعندما يعرف السبب والذي هو نداء (الواجب) يمنح (أجايون) العفو وتمد له يد العون...
