تزخر مكتبتنا العربية بعدد وافر من المعجم اللغوية النفسية التي كتبها علماؤنا القدامى، ككتاب العين للخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي، وتهذيب اللغة لمحمد بن أحمد الأزهري، ولكن هذه المعاجم، على نفاستها، لا تصلح المطلوب اليوم، ونجاحه لطلاب المرحلتين الابتدائية والتكميلية (الاعدادية، المتوسطة، من مراحل التعليم، ذلك أن الذين كتبوها كانوا علماء يوجهون ما يكتبون لعلماء، إذ لم يكن التعليم منتشراً في عهودهم كما نشهده اليوم.
وهذه المعاجم، وإن كانت مفيدة جداً لأجل الاختصاص في اللغة العربية، فأنخ يعوزها الكثيرين المصطلحات العلمية التي أفرزتها الحضارة الإنسانية اليوم، وقد أدرك علماؤنا المحدثون أهمية وضع معاجم مخصصة لتلامذة المدارس، فقام بعضهم يؤلف ما يراه مناسباً لهؤلاء التلامذة. فلاقت محاولات البعض الفشل، وأصابت محاولات أخرى بعض النجاح. وهذا القاموس الذي بين يدينا معجم الطلاب (عربي- عربي) جاء ليزيد لبنة مميزة في صرح معاجمنا العربية وهو يتميز بطرحه لكل المفردات التي لم تعد شائعة أو في دائرة الاستعمال أو بإثباته لمختلف المعاني المستدحثة للألفاظ والمصطلحات العلمية الحديثة، وباحتوائه على أكثر من خمسة آلاف مادة لغوية وثمان وثلاثين لوحة مصورة.
إلى جانب هذا يتميز المعجم بجمعه لأربعة ملاحق واحد في الصرف وآخر في تصريف الأفعال وثالث لقواعد الإملاء، ورابع لتراجم بعض الأدباء والشعراء المعاصرين ونجمعه كذلك لمجموعة من الخرائط والصور الفوتوغرافية الملونة لجسم الإنسان وخضار وفواكه وحيوانات وطيور.
