المؤلف هو إسماعيل إسحق القاضي ابن محدث البصرة، صاحب التصانيف، وشيخ المالكية وعالمهم ولد سنة 119، وسمع من جماعة كثيرة من الثقات، وشارك الإمام البخاري في كثير من شيوخه، كما سيلحظ القارئ في هذا الكتاب، ويدرك له في عمره حتى صار واحداً في عصره في علو الإسناد. روى عنه، عبد الله بن أحمد بن حنبل، موسى بن هاروت الحافظ.
في هذا الكتاب يسوق المؤلف فيه الأحاديث والآثار الواردة في فضل الصلاة على النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) وذكر مواضيعها بالأسانيد المتصلة منه إلى رواتها من الصحابة والتابعين، كما هي طريقة المتقدمين من المحدثين، بحيث يمكن العارف بعلم الحديث ورجاله من الحكم على أخباره بما تستحقه من صحة أو ضعف. هذا وأن من مزايا هذه السمة أنها مرت بأيدي جماعة من علماء الحنابلة المقدسين. فقد كتبها عبد الحميد المقدس، وأوقفها الإمام موفق الدين بن قدامة أحد المشهورين، وقرأها أخوه الإمام أبو عمر محمد بن أحمد بن قدامة المتوفي سنة (620). المقدسي المتوفي سنة (607)، على الشيخ الحافظ عبد الغني بن عبد الواحد المقدسي المتوفي سنة (600) وعليها سماع بخط الحافظ المقدسي.
