بهذه الكلمات ينهي واصف عواضة كتابه الذي تحدث فيه عن انطباعاته خلال الجولة التي قام بها في ربوع الولايات المتحدة الأميركية بدعوة من الإمام مهدي شمس الدين ضمن الوفد الذاهب برئاسته إلى هناك.
رحلته تلك وانطباعاته كانت لها تداعيات امتدت في عمر الزمان السياسي الأميركي الشرق وسطي من نكسة حزيران، إلى الحرب اللبنانية بكل مراراتها، إلى كامب ديفيد وأوسلو وغيرها، وإلى انكسار التوازن العالمي من انهيار الاتحاد السوفياتي واستفراد الولايات المتحدة بالقرار العالمي، إلى اجتياحات إسرائيل للبنان وعدوانها المستمر عليه منذ العام 1968.
رحلة واصف عواضة التي حملت تفاصيلها هذه الصفحات استدعت حديثاً ذا شؤون وشجون إلى أجيال تعرف القليل عن الولايات المتحدة الأميركية وسياساتها ووقائع الحياة فيها وتجارب الآخرين معها. كما طرحت تداعياتها على بساط البحث علاقة الولايات المتحدة مع الآخرين، عرباً ومسلمين ويهوداً، وموضع المفاوضات الجارية بشأن سلام عربي إسرائيلي، إلى جانب موضوعين حيويين وهامين هما واقع الأمم المتحدة، ووضع اللبنانيين في الولايات المتحدة.
