اختار مؤلف هذا الكتاب اسم "التعريفات" لهذه الشروح اللغوية والمعاني الاصطلاحية في مصنفات الراغب الأصفهاني، لما وجد كبير تشابه بين المفكر الأصفهاني وبين صاحب التعريفات: علي بن محمد بن علي، المعروف بالشريف الجرجاني.
فقد ذكر في ترجمة الشريف أنه "فيلسوف من كبار العلماء بالعربية". ولم يجد في وصف الراغب، أكثر انطباقاً عليه من هذه الكلمات الموجزة. فقد قالوا عنه "أن حظه في المعقولات أكثر"، ومشاركاته في علم الكلام والعقيدة مشهورة أمام الناس، وأما علمه بالعربية فيستطيع أن يتحسسه كل من قرأ مفرداته في "غريب القرآن" أو تعريفاً من تعريفاته للمفردات التي أوردها في هذا العمل المستخرج من مصنفاته.ويلفت النظر في هذه التعريفات عدة أمور ربما كانت سبباً في البحث عنها: 1-فمن هذه الأمور أنها تعريفات لغوية في أصلها، فالمصنف يبدأ تعريفه بالدلالة اللغوية للكلمة، بمعناها المعجمي الحسي. 2-والمعنى الإصطلاحي هو الذي ينتقل إليه المصنف بعد تثبيت المعنى اللغوي أولاً، ثم يرسم العلاقة العضوية التي تربط بينهما، في التطور الدلالي لمفردات اللغة. 3-يستشهد المصنف بالقرآن الكريم وبالحديث النبوي الشريف أولاً وبالشعر ثانياً على المعاني التي يستخرجها لمفرداته اللغوية. 4-يتوسع المصنف في إظهار أبعاد الدلالات التي يتناولها بالتوضيح، فيشرح أجزاء المفردات أو أقسامها. 5-إنه يصل، في النهاية، بشروحه، إلى ألأفكار العامة أو ما يمكن أن يسمى بالكليات. 6-وهذه النقطة تعود إلى نقطة أخرى في التوسع في شرح معاني المفردات اللغوية التي يتناولها بالشرح، ويعني بها المرادفات. 7-ومن قبيل هذا الحس الديني يحرص المصنف على أن يفصل في شرح الصفات، إذا كانت من بين مفرداته اللغوية المشروحة، إذا كانت مما يتصل بالبشر أو فيما يتصل بالله تعالى.
