هذا الكتاب ألفه الإمام الحافظ أبو عبد الله محمد بن محمود النجار سنة 643هـ كتبه عندما قدم إلى المدينة المنورة للزيادة حيث يقول بعدما اجتمع بجماعة من أهل المدينة: "فسألوني عن فضائل المدينة، وأخبارها، فأخبرتهم بما تعلق في خاطري من ذلك؛ فسألوني إثباته في أوراق...". وقد قيده من حفظه حيث أن مصادره لم تكن معه حين الزيارة. فهو قد أحب أن يجمع من تاريخ المدينة كتاباً شافياً جامعاً وفريداً يتحدث فيه عن أسماء وأخبار، وتواريخ، وأثار، وفضل المدينة المنورة، فدوّن هذا الكتاب الذي قسمه إلى ثمانية عشر باباً جاءت عناوينها كما يلي: الباب الاول: في ذكر أسماء المدينة وأول ساكنيها، الباب الثاني: في ذكر فتح المدينة، الباب الثالث: في ذكر هجرة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأصحابه إليها، الباب الرابع: في ذكر فضائلها، الباب الخامس: في ذكر تحريمها وحدود حرمها، الباب السادس: في ذكر وادي العقيق وفضله، الباب السابع: في ذكر آبار المدينة وفضلها، الباب الثامن: في ذكر جبل أحد وفضله وفضائل الشهداء به، الباب التاسع: في ذكر اجلاء بني النضير من المدينة، الباب العاشر: في ذكر حفر الخندق حول المدينة، الباب الحادي عشر: في ذكر قتل بن قريظة بالمدينة، الباب الثاني عشر: في ذكر مسجد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وفضله، الباب الثالث عشر: في ذكر المساجد التي بالمدينة وفضلها، الباب الرابع عشر: في ذكر مسجد الضرار وهدمه، الباب الخامس عشر: في ذكر وفاة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وصاحبيه رضي الله عنهما، الباب السادس عشر: في ذكر فضل زيارة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، الباب السابع عشر: في ذكر البقيع وفضله، الباب الثامن عشر: في ذكر أعيان من سكن المدينة من الصحابة والتابعين في بعدهم.
