لا ريب في أن البارودي ليس كغيره من شعراء العصر الحديث؛ فقد كان له من ريادة الشعر الحديث الذروة والذرى، وكانت منزلته بين أعلام مدرسة البعث والإحياء بمثابة السنا والسنام، وباختصار فإن البارودي رائد الشعر العربي الحديث بلا خلاف ولا اختلاف، وباختصار أشد فإن فعل الريادة ينبئ عن أهمية الجهد المبذول لبلوغ تلك المكانة والتربع على عرشها.. وهو جهد كان وسيبقى موطن احترام الدارسين ومحط تقديرهم.
تنوعت الدراسات التي اتخذت البارودي محورا لها؛ وكان من بينها دراسات اتخذت حياة البارودي وعصره موضع اهتمامها، فيما ركزت دراسات أخرى على البارودي بوصفه علماً من أعلام العرب ليس غير، وثمة دراسة ثالثة تناولت البارودي مؤسسا لمدرسة الإحياء والبعث ورائدا لها.
أما هذه الدراسة، فإنها ستتناول شعر محمود سامي البارودي، بالمقام الأول، تناولا فنياً، دون أن تغفل أهمية المرحلة التي عاشها، والمرحلة التي سبقته، وستأخذ بالاعتبار أهمية عودة البارودي إلى التراث، واعتماد القصيدة التراثية، بعد أن غيب هذا التراث الشعري، وتنوسي حتى كاد ينسى.
وستعنى هذه الدراسة، كذلك، بمختارات البارودي التي طرحها نموذجا للاحتذاء والتأسي، ولتكون معلما هاما على طريق البعث التجديد، وتمعارضاته التي عارض فيها فحول الشعراء الجاهليين والإسلاميين.
هذه وجاءت هذه الدراسة في تمهيد وثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة وملحقين اثنين على النحو التالي: التمهيد: تناول حالة الشعر قبل البارودي في بيئاته الثلاث: مصر والشام والعراق. أما الباب الأول: فتكون من أربعة فصول؛ تناول الفصل الأول عصر البارودي من الجانب السياسي والاجتماعي والثقافي والفكري، بينما تناول الفصل الثاني حياة البارودي من مولده إلى مماته. أما الفصل الثالث، فعني بثقافة البارودي ومصادر هذه الثقافة. أما الفصل الرابع، فخصص للحديث عن آثار البارودي الأدبية، ولا سيما الديوان. أما الباب الثاني: فتحدث عن الشعر البارودي ومصادره، حيث تناول الفصل الأول الأغراض الشعرية عند البارودي، بينما خصص الفصل الثاني للدراسة الفنية، وتطور الفن الشعري عند البارودي. أما الباب الثالث: فتم تقسيمه إلى فصلين؛ تناول الفصل الأول تأثير البارودي في الحركة الشعرية، مع الإشارة إلى بعض الذين تأثروا به، وتناول الفصل الثاني، آراء بعض النقاد والباحثين في شعر البارودي وإبداعه.
