كان الشيخ عبد الله المامقاني، مصنف هذا الكتاب عالماً عاملاً، فقيهاً جامعا، أديباً كاملاً، محدثاً أصولياً، وكان مرجعاً لجمع كبير من المسلمين، ويعدّ من أئمة التقليد والفتيا، له مؤلفات كثيرة منها مقباس الهداية في علم الدراية الذي نقلب صفحاته. وعلم الدراية موضوع هذا الكتاب هو من العلوم المتوقف عليها الفقه والاجتهاد عند أولي الفهم والاعتبار. وقد أوفى المؤلف في هذا الفن من العلوم حقه وأعطاه جدّه، واستوفى البحث استيعاباً.
وقد خرج المصنف في بعض مباحثه عن المنهجية المتداولة فوسع في بعض الأبواب، وأدخل بعض المباحث الأصولية، ونقع جملة من المسائل الحديثة، وتفرد في جملة من تحقيقاته واختياراته. وقد اعتنى المحقق بإخراجه بهذه الحلة وكان عمله في التحقيق على الشكل التالي: ضبط النص وتقويمه، تخريج مصادر الكتاب وضبطها وإشباعها بمصادر أخرى، التعرض لبعض الخلافات إجمالاً، ونقد بعض النصوص إشارة، تذييل الكتاب بحدود مائتين وخمسين مستدركاً لكل ما يستوجبه النص أو تقتضيه ضرورة البحث.
