لم يكن تأليف "مسكن الفؤاد" وليد حالة علمية بحتة يقررها واقع الدرس والتدريس، أو تمليها حاجة المناظرات الحوزوية، بقدر ما كان إفرازاً لحالة وجدانية وعاطفية عاشها الشهيد الثاني بكل جوارحه وأحاسيسه وتفاعل معها تفاعلاً إيجابياً طيلة حياته الشريفة، فقد ذكرت أغلب المصادر التي ترجمت للشهيد أنه ابتلي بموت أولاده في مقتبل أعمارهم حتى أصبح لا يثق ببقاء أحد منهم.
لقد واجه الشهيد الثاني حالة الحرمان العائلي بأسمى آيات الصبر والجلد فألف كتابه "مسكن الفؤاد" وقلبه يقطر ألماً وحسرة وهو يرى أولاده، أزهاراً يانعة تقطف أمام عينيه. يقول رضوان الله عليه في مقدمة كتابه المذكور: "فلما كان الموت هو الحادث العظيم، والأمر الذي هو على تفريق الأحبة مقيم، وكان فراق المحبوب يعدّ من أعظم المصائب، حتى كاد يزيغ له قلب ذي العقل، والموسوم بالحدس الصائب، خصوصاً ومن أعظم الأحباب الولد، الذي هو مهجة الألباب، ولهذا رتب على فراقه جزيل الثواب، ووعده أبواه شفاعته فيهما يوم المآب".
فلذلك جمع المؤلف في هذه الرسالة جملة من الآثار النبوية، وأحوال أهل الكمالات العلية، ونبذة من التنبيهات الجليّة، ما ينجلي به الصدأ عن قلوب المحزونين، وتنكشف به الغمة عن المكروبين، بل تبتهج به نفوس العارفين. ويمتاز هذا الكتاب-على صغر حجمه-بخصوصية موضوعه، مما جعله مرجعاً يعتمد عليه من بابه، فقد ركن إليه جمع من أصحاب الموسوعات الروائية كعلامة المجلس في بحار الأنوار، والشيخ الحر في الجواهر السنية، والشيخ النوري في مستدرك الوسائل وغيرهم.
