منذ أن طرح الطهطاوي أسئلته وأجوبته النهضوية عام 1843 في كتابه "تخليص الأبريز"، مروراً بمن جاء بعده من الكتّاب والمفكرين النهضويين العرب، الذين ظلت قضايا النهضة، عند الكثيرين منهم تشكل هاجساً دائماً، حالمين بتجاوز كل معوقات تقدم هذه الأمة والوصول بها إلى مصاف الأمم الأخرى، المتقدمة. إن هذا السؤال عن النهضة وسبل تحقيقها، سيظل مشروعاً طالما أن أمتنا العربية لم تستطع تجاوز تخلفها، هذا التخلف الذي طالت مدته وتعقدت آلية تكوّنه، بحيث أصبح يشكل إشكالية قائمة بذاتها أو استقصاء يتطلب بالضرورة إعادة تفكيك وتركيب هذا الواقع من جديد كي يتابع عمله بالشكل الأمثل.
لذلك يحاول عدنان عويد في كتابه هذا إعادة طرح النهضوية نفسها من جديد، والتي تتمحور في هذين السياقين: متى بدأت الأمة العربية تفقد إمكانية نهوضها؟ وما هي جملة المعوقات الموضوعية والذاتية التي حالت دون هذا النهوض؟ يحاول المؤلف الإجابة عن هذين التساؤلين للوقوف على معرفة بدء النهضة (من أين نبدأ) وأدواتها، وما مدى قدرة هذه الأدوات على تحقيق الفعل النهضوي.
