مثل الإسلام في المدينة طوراً تأسيساً تشكل فيه الإسلام فكرياً وإيديولوجيا، وإن لم يشهد إقامة الدولة الإسلامية بما تتطلبه من مؤسسات وتنظيمات إدارية ومالية وتشريعات، بل كان الأمر أقرب إلى نواة بدائية لم تتخلص تماماً من بعض بصمات التنظيم القبلي والعشائري القديم. لذلك يبدو إسلام المدينة إسلام التأصيل النظري والإيديولوجي والعقائدي البحث.
غير أن المتفحص في تلك الفترة يهوله التقديس الذي حفها به المسلمون حتى يومنا هذا. فالطور المديني في وجدان المسلمين المشترك طور نموذجي، كامل، مقدس، بلا أخطاء أو شوائب، ينبغي أن يحتذي. وانطلاقاً من هذا الموقف، اكتست كل الأحداث والوقائع المتصلة بتلك الفترة طابعاً مقدساً، فتحولت إلى بديهيات لا يرقى إليها الشك، ولا المراجعة، ولا المساءلة. باختصار، لا حاجة إلى التفكير في الطور المديني من الدعوة المحمدية في نظر المسلمين، ولا إلى التنقيب في حيثياته وحقائقه، بل ينبغي بالأحرى الانبهار والاعتبار والاقتداء به اقتداءً أعمى.
وقد ازداد هذا الموقف رسوخاً في المراحل اللاحقة من تاريخ الإسلام، وامتد قروناً طويلة من التمجيد والتبرير، حتى عسر الاعتراف بتاريخية هذا الدين، وعسر تحليل تطوره في ضوء المعطيات المادية التي تشكل فيها، وغلب التقريظ على التفكير، وحجبت الخرافات والمبالغات الكثير من حقائق التاريخ، وغلفت العتمة تلك الفترة رغم كثرة ما ألف فيها من سر ومغاز، فاستحال بذلك التعرف على إسلام المدينة في حقيقته بصورة مباشرة... وهذا بالضبط ما حاولنا عمله في بحثنا القصير هذا.
