"لم أكن قد بلغت بعد سوى بضعة أشهر من عمري حين اصطحبتني أمي لزيارة لعمتها السيدة (دلال صفية) بمناسبة قدومها لفترة وجيزة من دمشق مكان إقامتها إلى اللاذقية، ولكن قد مضى وقت طويل على فرحها بلقائها الأول بي وانهماكها بملاعبتي حين استدارت نحو أمي مذهولة تسألها ما إذا كانت قد لاحظت ما يتعلق بأمري: فعيناي كما تراءى لها ليستا على ما يرام، انهما لا تستجيبان لإشاراتها الكثيرة، وتتحولان عنها نحو جهات أخرى، وإذا ما اتجهنا إليها، فإنهما لا تدققان النظر بصورة جيدة. مسيرة عذاب على طريق الظلمة والظلام سارت عليها ريم هلال، سرديات لطيفة، ومواقف إنسانية مؤثرة تتوقف عندها الكاتبة مبرزة عاطفة الأهل حيناً وجور المجتمع أحياناً، إلا أن مسيرتها الكفاحية الناجحة لم تتوقف أمام الحواجز التي نصبت في وجهها بعد أن سلب بصرها، بل هي أنارت حياتها ودروب العلم ببصيرتها. كانت مثابرة مجالدة صبورة ومكافحة وتمتلك أملاً حققته بوصولها إلى مركز تعليمي مرموق.
يحكي هذا الكتاب عن تجربة المؤلفة الكفيفة البصر منذ ميلادها حتى حصولها على درجة الدكتوراه، وما تخلّل، وما تخلّل هاتيْن المرحلتين من آلام وأفراح قد تمثّل في عمقها وحرارتها ونزعتها الإنسانيّة ظلاً لجوهر الحياة. كل ذلك في إطار سردٍ روائي شفاف.
وُلدت المؤلفة في اللاذقية وتعمل الآن مدرسة للنقد العربي الحديث في كلية الآداب، قسم اللغة العربية بجامعة تشرين.
