لقد كان الحصان حقاً خلاً وفياً، أعطى فأجزل العطاء، وأعان الإنسان على الشدائد ووقف معه في مواجهة المصاعب، فدرأ عنه الأخطار وخاض معه أضرس الحروب وأهوج المعارك، وحمله في أسفاره وترحاله... وكان مخبأ لخفاياه وحرزاً لأسراره.
ومع ما تتسم به هذه الصلة من قوة، فعلها طابع من الروحانية والمشاركة الوجدانية التي قد لا نألفها بين إنسان وآخر ولا نجدها بين صديق وصديقة. وصحيح أن ركوب الخيل خرج من بداية كبيرة وانتهى في أفق ضيق في زماننا هذا، ولكنه مع ذلك يبقى فناً رفيعاً ومجالاً جيداً لتدريب الجسم، ولا يخفى على أحد بأن ركوب الخيل يعدو عن ذلك كونه وسيلة لتهذيب النفس وترويضها وأداة لضبطها وكبحها وجعلها أكثر تحملاً للمصاعب وصبراً وحملاً على الشدائد.
وهذا الكتاب سفر رائع يتحدث عن الخيل وعلومه حيث يستهل المؤلف كتابه في الفصل الأول بلمحة تاريخية عن الخيل في العصر الجاهلي والإسلامي، لينتقل للحديث في الفصل الثاني عن الحصان العربي (نقحة طيب من الجزيرة العربية) أنسابه، وضعه، مقاييس الحصان العربي وألوانه، وأنواع الشية في الخيول العربية.
ويتناول في الفصل الثالث ألوان الخيول وشيّاتها (علاماتها المميزة)، وفي الفصل الرابع يتحدث عن ركوب الخيل، ويتناول في الفصل الخامس والسادس على التوالي عدة الركوب، بدء الركوب، تمارين لكل من الجواد والفارس ليتحدث في الفصلين عن أمور هامة اعتبارية والعناية بالخيل لكل من الجواد والفارس ليتحدث في الفصلين عن أمور هامة اعتبارية والعناية بالخيل وسيساتها.
وينتقل من خلال الفصول العاشر والحادي عشر والثاني عشر والثالث عشر والرابع عشر والخامس عشر، وعلى التوالي للحديث عن القفز عن الحواجز رياضيات الفروسية المشهورة، لمحة عن بعض ألعاب الفروسية المشهورة، ترويض الخيل وتهجينها (تنسيلها)، ويختتم بالفصل السادس عشر بمبحث عن أمراض الخيل.
