لا شك في أن النظر في أحوا العلماء الصالحين من الأوائل والمتأخرين، مما يشحذ الهمم، ويقوي العزائم، ويجمع القلوب، ولا سيما إذا جمع مع النظر: الرغبة في التشبه بهم، وسلوك سبيلهم، وطريقهم المحمودة في إتباع سنة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ويضاف إلى ذلك إذا كان هذا التشبه في أحوال تمر بالمسلم في كل وقت وحين، وإن الله تعالى بلطفه قد وزع على العباد خيرات الدنيا والآخرة، وهو سبحانه أعلم بمواضع الفضل في عباده، فيعطي هذا برحمته، ويحرم هذا بعدله، وما ربك بظلام للعبيد، ومن جملة ما يوزعه الرب تعالى بحكمته: البلايا والرزايا والهموم والكربات، التي تمر بالمسلم والكافر، فيصبر لها المسلم ويحتسبها عند الله تعالى، وهو يعلم أنها رسالة ربه إليه، فيستقبل رسالة ربه بالقبول والتسليم، ثم بالصبر على ما أصابه، أما الكافر والمخذول فينصرف عن حكمة البلاء والمصاب، إلى الاعتراض على رب الأرباب.
وما يسعى إليه هذا الكتاب هو بسرد أخبار سلة من صالحين أنة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وبيان أحوالهم. وبداية قدك الكتاب بتمهيد تم فيه التفرقة بين أولياء الرحمن وأولياء الشيطان، وبيان الأحوال الربانية والأحوال الشيطانية ومن هم عباد الله على الحقيقة في السر والعلم ومن هم عبيد لشهواتهم.
