هذا الكتاب يدرس أصول "ظاهرة ستالين" ونموها وإنحسارها التي سادت في الإتحاد السوفييتي من الثلاثينات وحتى موت ستالين في عام 1953.
لقد شجب المؤتمر العشرون للحزب الشيوعي في الإتحاد السوفييتي المنعقد في عام 1956، في جلسة مغلقة المظاهر الشريرة التي حدثت تحت حكم ستالين، ولكنه عزاها إلى "عبادة الفرد"، غير أن التفسير الماركسي الذي أعد في هذا الكتاب يسعى إلى الكشف عن جميع الجوانب المعقدة والمتناقضة لظاهرة ستالين، والتي لم يؤثر في الإتحاد السوفييتي وحده حسب، بل وفي الدول الإشتراكية الجديدة التي ظهرت عقب الحرب العالمية الثانية، والحركة الشيوعية العالمية بكاملها أيضاً، والكتاب يبحث عن الجذور في روسيا ما قبل الثورة، والظروف التي حدثت الثورة ضمنها والحرب الأهلية الناشئة منها، وإذ يدرس المؤلف الطريقة التي تطورت فيها الدولة الإشتراكية يبحث عن فهم ليكفية التعايش بين ما حدث من تقدم إقتصادي وثقافي لا نظير له في التأريخ ونظام للدولة تسلطي وإستبدادي على النحو الذي نعرفه.
إن ظاهرة ستالين لم تولد مع ستالين ولم تختف بموته، فهل كانت نتيجة حتمية لثورة إشتراكية، أو أنها كانت بالأحرى نتيجة عارضة لأسباب ثانوية؟ وهذه الدراسة لظاهرة ستالين تظهر، على أساس من البحث التأريخي الرصين أنها في الواقع نشأت من ظروف خاصة أسست فيها الدولة الإشتراكية الأولى.
والكاتب، جان إيلينشتاين، شيوعي فرنسي بارز، وأستاذ جامعي، ومؤرخ محترف ومدير مشارك في مركز الدراسات الماركسية في باريس، ومؤلف كتاب عن تأريخ الإتحاد السوفييتي في أربعة مجلدات.
