المغني الفريد هو معجم يعرض فيه المؤلف حسن سعيد الكرمي صورة مهمة عن الاستعمال اللغوي الإنكليزي الأمريكيّ، إلا أن هذا الاستعمال منتشر بشكل لا يمكن لمؤلف المعاجم إلا أن يأخذه بعين الاعتبار كما يأخذ الاستعمال اللغوي الإنكليزي وهو الأصل. وقد جرى الكرمي في تأليفه بصورة عامة على الأسلوب المتّبع في تأليف المعاجم مع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار في الدرجة الأولى الاستعمالات اللغوية الأمريكية، في الأفعال والأسماء والصفات وغيرها وذلك لأن هذا الاستعمال أصبح يضاهي الاستعمال الإنكليزي في انتشاره وأهميته. واستعان المؤلف على ذلك بالأخذ بالأمثلة العديدة لتوضيح معاني كل كلمة على اختلافها والمعاني الأخرى المرشحة. وفي جميع هذه المحادثات كان غرض المؤلف الأول، تعليم اللغة العربية عن طريق اللغة الإنكليزية والعكس بالعكس أيضاً، تعليم اللغة الإنكليزية عن طريق اللغة العربية.
