يدور موضوع الكتاب حول "فن الملاحة عند العرب" يقدمه الكاتب حسن صالح شهاب للقارئ العربي بهدف فهم أسسه وقواعده ليسهل له فهم علوم العرب البحرية.
الكتاب الذي ما كان له أن يكون - كما يقول المؤلف - إلا بفضل الربانية والبحارة وبناء السفن الذين التقى بهم، خلال زياراته للمراسي القديمة في ساحل بلاد العرب الجنوبي، وفي المراكب الشراعية التي سافر فيها، عدة مرات، فيما بين عُمان والكويت، هؤلاء الذين لم يبخلوا عليه بشرح ما استعصى عليه فهمه من المصطلحات الملاحية، ولم تضيف صدورهم بأسئلته (الفضولية) أحياناً كما يحلو للمؤلف وصفها، عن كل صغير وكبير من الأعمال والعادات البحرية التي شاهدها عندهم.
وعبر صفحات الكتاب يعود المؤلف إلى تاريخ الملاحة عند العرب فيذكر ملامح من تاريخ الملاحة العربية والصراع على تجارة المحيط الهندي، ويستحضر ماذا كُتب عن "صور نجوم الجانب الشمالي" و"صورة المنطقة أبو البروج وهي إثنا عشر برجاً" و"صور الكواكب الجنوبية وهي خمس عشرة صورة" وغيرها من الدوائر ومدارات الكواكب حول الأرض، والأقاليم المعمورة من الأرض عند القدماء.
ويذكر بعض أساليب الملاحة عند العرب في الظروف الصعبة والخطرة، وإسهامات كل من أحمد بن ماجد، وسليمان المهري في علم الملاحة من الكتب والمنظومات الشعرية، كما يأتي على مواسم السفر من بر العرب عند ابن ماجد والمهري وما خطه البحارة من إرشادات ملاحية للمسافر من بر العرب إلى الهند... وسواها من فنون الملاحة في البحار...
