قام الرحالة البريطاني كينغلك برحلته الشهيرة إلى المشرق العربي عام 1834-1835 عندما كانت الرحلات إلى هذه البلاد حلماً يراود كل فتى أوروبي، لكن السياحة فيها كانت محفوفة بالمخاطر ولا يقوى عليها إلا من كانت تستهويه المجازفات والمخاطر، مع توافر نفقات الرحلة. استغرقت سياحته نحو عام كامل وكان يرسل أخبارها بشكل رسائل إلى صديقه إليوت واربرتون، الذي كان يعزم الرحيل إلى المشرق، فاستفاد منها في كتاب رحلته الذي سماه "الهلال الصليب"، تحفل الرحلة بمعلومات قيمة، سجل فيها كينغلك المؤثرات والانطباعات التي تركتها في نفسه، من عادات أهل البلاد الذين زارهم واختلط بهم واطلع على أفكارهم وخبر تقاليدهم بأسلوب قصصي وصفي جذاب يأخذ بمجامع القلوب.
