لا يعلم عن أصل اليزيديين شيء، ويقول البارزن مكس فون أوبنهيم الألماني "أنهم أمراداً أشداء البنية سكنوا جبل سنجار منذ أكثر من قرنين" ويجوز أنهم هاجروا إلى العراق مع الأكراد من الشمال وانفردوا عن بني جلدتهم بالجبال خوفاً ممن يجاورهم فاحتفظوا بدينهم القديم وشيدوا أكثر معابدهم في قضائي الشيخان وسنجار (لواء الموصل) وهم إنما يسمون أنفسهم باليزيدية نسبة إلى يزيد بن معاوية ثاني الخلفاء الأمويين. ويقول المستر لوك (أن هذه القبائل كانت تدعى بالأصل "داسناي" أما اليزيدية فهو اسم أطلقه عليهم جيرانهم..الخ).
إذ أن الغريب في هذا الأمر هو أن الأستاذ الدكتور مصطفى جواد، المتخصص باللغة والتاريخ، يشارك قرنين لا أكثر. وهي مغالطة كبيرة، إذ أن كتب التاريخ العربية والكتب الأخرى التي تتحدث عن الأيزيدية تشير وجودهم في هذه المنطقة التي أصبحت جزء من العراق الحديث منذ فترة الأمويين والعباسيين. وأنه لا يعلم عن أصلهم شيئاً في وقت يؤكد فيه أنهم أكراداً وأنهم قد انفردوا عن بني جلدتهم بالجبال وحافظوا على ديانتهم القديمة.
ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلى المشاركة في توضيح بعض الأمور عن الأكراد الأيزيديين الذين ينتمون إلى هذه المنطقة منذ قرون طويلة وأنهم يشكلون جزء من الشعب أو الأمة الكردية الموزعة على دول عديدة منها العراق وتركيا وإيران وسوريا.
