لم يكن الاقتصاد الإسلامي متمتعاً بذاتية مستقلة، ولم يكن ثمة خط فاصل بينه وبين جوانب الحياة الأخرى. ذلك أن المسائل الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والأمور الدينية ظلت عبر العصر الإسلامي الذهبي متفاعلة متداخلة تنبثق جميعاً من معين واحد هو الإيمان بالله تعالى، ولكن يمكن تحديد ماهية الاقتصاد الإسلامي بأنه مجموعة الأصول العامة الاقتصادية التي تستخرجها من القرآن والسنة، وهو البناء الاقتصادي الذي يقام على أساس تلك الأصول بحسب كل بيئة وكل عصر.
هذا ولما كان الجانب الاقتصادي من حياة الناس هو الذي يسيطر في عالم اليوم على مقدراتهم السياسية والاجتماعية، فقد نحا مؤلف هذه الموسوعة نحواً جديداً، حاول من خلالها إبراز أهم الموضوعات الاقتصادية الإسلامية مشفوعة بدراسات مقارنة في الاقتصاد المعاصر، هذا هو موضوع الجزء الأول من الموسوعة، وهو موضوع بطبيعته من الموضوعات التي تتسم بالتخصص الدقيق، وخاصة بالنسبة للاقتصاد العالمي والدراسات المقارنة، ويتوقف إلمام القارئ العادي به، وفهمه واستيعابه له، واطمئنانه إليه، وثقته به، على التوسع في الشرح والسرد والإلمام بالتعريفات والتفاصيل التي تشتمل عليها موضوعاته الرئيسية وعناصره الأساسية، لذلك كان من المؤلف استطراد مع هذه التفاصيل وتقصياً حيثما رأى ضرورة في ذلك وقد اتبع هذا الجزء بجزء ثاني تناول جانباً آخر من جوانب الاقتصاد الإسلامي ألا وهو علم المالية العامة، باعتباره فرعاً منه وناشئاً عنه.
