لقد اشتمل كتاب "الدرر السنية في الأجوبة النجدية" الذي جمعه الشيخ عبد الرحمن بن قاسم –رحمه الله- من رسائل وفتاوى كبار علماء نجد، على نقولات ولفتات تاريخية ليست بالقليلة، جاءت متفرقة ومبثوثة في تلكل الرسائل والفتاوى، تتعلق بتاريخ نجد، سواء قبل دعوة الشيخ محمد بن عبد الوهاب رحمه الله، أو بعدها –زمن الدولة السعودية بمراحلها الثلاث-.
ومعلوم أن كلام العلماء الشرعيين في التاريخ له أهمية قصوى لدى الباحثين، لتحريهم فيما يكتبون، وضبطهم لما ينقلون من أخبار وأحداث، مقارنة بغيرهم ممن لا تحقيق عنده في الغالب. ولعذا تجد مشاهير مؤرخي الإسلام هم من العلماء الشرعيين.
وقد تنبه كبار الباحثين في التاريخ النجدي من المعاصرين لأهمية الاعتماد على أقوال العلماء الشرعيين الواردة في "الدرر السنية" أو "مجموعة الرسائل والمسائل" أو غيرها من كتب ورسائل علماء الدعوة، كالشيخ حمد الجاسر –رحمه الله- والدكتور أبو علية، والأستاذ أبي عبد الرحمن ابن عقيل الظاهري، والدكتور عبد الله العثيمين.. وغيرهم، فاعتمدوا عليها وألمحوا لها في دراساتهم.
وقد أجاد المؤلف في تقريبه للنصوص التاريخية الواردة في كتاب "الدرر السنية" بين أيدي الباحثين في كتابه الجمعي هذا، وسهل الاستفادة منه لوضعه فهارس لكل مادة ينقلها.
وطريقته في هذا الاستخراج أنه: أولاً: مشى فيه على ترتيب المجلدات، فاستخرج ما يتعلق بما ذكر، دون تقيد بتسلسل الأحداث. ثانياً: وثقت النقل من "الدرر السنية" في نهاية كل مادة. ثالثاً: جعل فهرساً للعناوين التي وضعتها سابقاً لتسهل الإفادة من الكتاب. وقبل هذا قدم بموجز تاريخي للدولة السعودية بمراحلها الثلاث يسهل للقارئ فهم النقولات التي سيقرأها في الكتاب.
