أدى التطور التاريخي لعلم الكيمياء إلى إنفصاله إلى خمسة مجالات: التحليلة والحيوية وغير العضوية والفيزيائية، لكن من الصعب تبين الحدود الفاصلة بين هذه الأقسام بسبب ما يقدمه كل فرع منها للفروع الأخرى، وقد اجتازت الكيمياء التحليلية فترة نمو وتغيير سريعين مثلها في ذلك مثل بقية فروع الكيمياء الفيزيائية والفيزياء الحيوية والبيولوجيا الجزيئية، وقد حدث العديد من التقدم في هذه المجالات إعتماداً على ما توصلت إليه الدراسات التحليلية.
ويمكن تصور أهمية الكيمياء التحليلية بالنسبة للمجالات العلمية المختلفة بالنظر إلى تأثيرها في التحاليل الطبية، وفي أبحاث الصيدلانيات وفي التحليل البيئية، فالكيمياء التحليلية إذن هي أحد فروع علم الكيمياء المتعددة، والغرض منها الكشف عن المواد وطرق فصلها ومعرفة مكونات أي مادة أو مخلوط وتقديرها تقديراً كمياً.
شعوراً منا بالحاجة وتدعو الضرورة إلى وجود كتاب في "الكيمياء التحليلية" يلبي حاجة طلاب الكليات المتوسطة والمعاهد العليا، ويردف الدراسة الجامعية في هذا المجال، رأى المؤلف أن يضع هذا الكتاب ليضيفه إلى مثيلات له ظهرت في "الكيمياء العامة" والكيمياء الحيوية وكتباً أخرى للتجارب العملية، وهو قد يكون لبنة صغيرة في صرح التعريب الذي يمتد إلى التعليم العلمي الجامعي.
وهذا الكتاب بإنحصار موضوعاته وإرتباطه بالمنهاج الذي وضعته وزارة التربية والتعليم محدود الهدف فهو بالدرجة الأولى موجه لمن وضع لهم ذلك المنهاج، أي طلاب الكليات المتوسطة، لكنه من ناحية أخرى لا بد أن يعين طلاب الجامعة العلميين الذي يدرس معظمهم مساقاً بسيطاً في الكيمياء التحليلة في البدء، فقد يكون وسيلتهم للتغلب على صعوبة التعامل مع اللغة الإنجليزية التي فرضت عليهم؛ وقد أدمج في الكتاب فصلاً يتضمن التجارب العملية المقررة ليكون بذلك مزدوج الفائدة.
