"وسقط على الأرض متعباً كالظل، حاول أن يعانق الشمس بنظره، لم يفلح. أحس بأن شيئاً ما يشده إلى الأرض. راح إصبعان من يده يتحسسان أعضاء وجهه، ويتفقدان إذا كان كل شيء في مكانه كالمعتاد أم لا. كان الدم بارداً. شعر بأنه ثقيل كالطين. ألقى بنظره إلى الأمام. لا تزال الدار على بعد أمتار. حاول أن يصرخ لكنه تذكر: إن الرجال لا يصرخون أبداً.
وفي صراع بارد مع الاحتضار، حاول أن يتقدم خطوة، أو أقل. كان التعب أقوى من كل المحاولات، أحس بأنه يتحجر، بأنه مربوط إلى الأرض كمقبرة. لملم نفسه. تنفس الألم من عينيه. وبجهد كالقدر، وصل إلى الباب الخشبية للدار، حاول أن يدق عليها ليعلن عن وصوله. أمسك بعروة الباب. سحب نفسه، حاول الوقوف ولكن قبل أن يفلح، سقطت الباب وتكوم فوقها كجثة. كان البيت خالياً.. وخرباً كالأطلال".
