مؤلف هذا الكتاب "جان روستان" بيولوجي وكاتب وعضو في الأكاديمية الفرنسية، قسم حياته بين التجربة العلمية والنشاط الأدبي، وأننا لندين إليه بأبحاث عن التوالد العذري، والإصطناعي، والتوالد بالمؤنث وحده، وإزدواج الصبغيات عن طريق تبريد البيضة، والتشوهات الوراثية أو المكتسبة عند الضفدع، وغير ذلك.
ولم يقتصر المؤلف في كتبه، على الأبحاث العلمية الخالصة، بل أضفى عليها ألواناً عديدة، منها محاولات نفسية وأخلاقية، ودراسات تاريخية، وسير وكتب عن حياة الحيوان، ومختارات من نظريات فلسفية، كما يعود الفضل إليه، في تعريف الجمهور الفرنسي في علم الوراثة، وتحسين النسل، وقد عمل المؤلف كثيراً، على نشر أسس المعارف البيولوجية ليعطي هذا العالم كل قيمته الثقافية، وإعتباره الإنساني.
لقد نظر المؤلف في كتابه هذا إلى قصة الكائن البشري، فألفاها وحدة متسلسلة متطورة، فعرض مشاهدات الأزمنة كلها، وتجارب البلدان جميعها، لذا جاءت كل جملة من جمل كتابه، تعبيراً عن جهد عالم، ونتيجة لتجاربه الطويلة الشاقة، ولعلها كانت ثمرة لحياة عاشها صاحبها من أجل دراسة موضوع واحد.
والآن لو أنعمنا النظر في المعارف والمعلومات، التي تكونت لدينا اليوم عن الإنسان، لوجدناها ضخمة غزيرة، ولكنها تقف في الوقت نفسه، عثرة في وجه إستعمالها والإستفادة منها؛ وهذا ما انتبه إليه مؤلف الكتاب، إذ لم يبلغ المؤلف تفصيل المعلومات والإسهاب فيها، بحيث تحتاج إلى مجلدات عدة، بل اكتفى بذكر لبق لكل النظريات والمعارف فحاول إدخال مشكلة التوالد والأمومة، ضمن صفحات كتيّب صغير يوضح لنا فيه سبل المعرفة، ويزيدنا إعجاباً وإكباراً بمكتشفات العلوم الطبية، ولعله أراد من وراء ذلك أيضاً، أن يربط النظرة الإجتماعية لمكانة المرأة، بمدى تقدم المعارف البيولوجية، كما رمى أيضاً إلى إظهار دورها الهام في الإنجاب، ذلك الدور الذي لا يقل أهمية عن دور الرجل، إن لم يتفوق عليه.
