إن أحكام الحجاب لم تجعل مسلمات العهد النبوي يشعرن أنها أحكام قد شرعت لتنحيتهن من الحياة الاجتماعية. ولكن في العهود اللاحقة، لما بدأت آثار الانحلال الأخلاقي تظهر شيئاً فشيئاً في المجتمع المسلم فرأى بعض الفقهاء أن الحل لعلاج هذا الانحلال هو فرض القيود على حركة المرأة الاجتماعية، وكانت هذه هي الطريقة الوحيدة في نظرهم لإنقاذ المجتمع من الفتنة، ولكن ما كان ينبغي لهم هو إصلاح أخلاق الرجال وأحوالهم بدلاً من تكبيل المرأة باسم الحجاب وتحديد دورها بين الجدران الأربعة، ولو كان كذلك لما ترتكبنا خطأ تعطيل نصف قوة المجتمع باسم الجلباب. إن هذا الكتاب محاولة لانتشال الأمة من وهدة الإفراط والتفريط في هذا الموضوع الحساس والخطير.
