قال ابن أبي حاتم: (فأما أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فهم الذين شهدوا الوحي والتنزيل، وعرفوا التفسير والتأويل، وهم الذين اختارهم الله عز وجل لصحبة نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم ونصرته، وإقامة دينه وإظهار حقه، فرضيهم له صحابة، وجعلهم لنا أعلاماً وقدوة، فحفظوا عنه صلى الله عليه وسلم ما بلغهم عن الله عز وجل، وما سن وما شرع، وحكم وقضى، وندب وأمر ونهى وأدب، ووعوه وأتقنوه ففقهوا في الدين، وعلموا أمر ونهى وأدب، ووعوه وأتقنوه ففقهوا في الدين، وعلموا أمر الله ونهيه، ومراده بمعاينة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ومشاهدتهم منه تفسير الكتاب وتأويله وتلقفهم منه واستنباطهم عنه، فشرفهم الله عز وجل بما من عليهم وأكرمهم به من وضعه إياهم موضع القدوة، فنفى عنهم الشك والكذب، والغلط والريبة، والغمز، وسماهم عدول الأمة، فقال عز ذكره في محكم كتابه: "وكذلك جعلنكم أمة وسطاً لتكونوا شهداء على الناس" ففسر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن الله عز وجل ذكره قوله "وسطا" قال "عدلاً" فكانوا عدول الأمة وأئمة الهدى وحجج الدين ونقله الكتاب والسنة. وندب الله عز وجل إلى التمسك بهديهم والجري على منهاجهم والسلوك لسبيلهم والإقتداء بهم.
فمن انطوت سريرته على محبتهم، ودان الله تعالى بتفضيلهم ومودتهم، وتبرأ ممن أضمر بغضهم، فهو الفائز بالمدح الذي مدحهم الله تعالى.
والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يهتم بإجلاء شيء من فضائلهم، وبذكر بعض من مآثرهم مع إيراده لبعض الأخبار عن مجموعة منهم، ثم من سار على نهجهم، وهكذا تحدث الكتاب عن سيرة ثمانية من أصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم الذين أعلنوا إسلامهم، وهداهم الله من الضلالة فأسلموا وآمنوا، وهؤلاء هم: عمير بن وهب، الطفيل بن عمرو الدوسين عمرو بن العاص، ثمامة بن أتال، طمام بن ثعلبة، عبد الله بن سلام، ابن سعنة اليهودي وأخيراً عكرمة بن أبي جهل، كما وفي الكتاب ترجمة للإمام أحمد بن حنبل، وأحرى لشيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية.
