"حافظ فلاح نشيط، ينهض في الصباح الباكر، يذهب إلى حقله، يمسك بمعوله، يشق التربة ويسقي الزرع، ويحرث، ويعمل طوال النهار في جد ونشاط. ثم يعود عند الغروب إلى بيته، وقد أصابه التعب الشديد فأجهده. ولكنه كان يعود مع ذلك والابتسامة تعلو وجهه، سعيداً بما أداه من عمل وإنتاج. ومع جده ونشاطه، كان لا يترك صلاة من الصلوات الخمس إلا أداها في وقتها، فهو يحافظ على الصلوات كلها، إما في الحقل أو في المسجد حين يعود إلى بيته. وكان من عاداته أنه إذا صلى العشاء جلس في صحن المسجد مع أصدقائه وأحبائه يستمعون إلى درس العلم الذي يلقيه الشيخ محفوظ إمام المسجد كل ليلة. وقد لاحظ حافظ أن الشيخ محفوظاً كان يكرر في كل ليلة جملة لا يغيرها في دروسه. كان يقول في كل درس: إن الله يرزق الهاجع والناجع والنائم على صرصور أذنه. فتعجب حافظ من هذه الجملة التي تتكرر كل ليلة ولا يفهم معناها".
معنى هذا القول هو ما ستشرحه هذه القصة من سلسلة أطرف الحكايات.
