كلما نذكر بلاد المغرب العربي في الأدب نذكر أولئك الأفذاذ الذين حافظوا على شعلة الأدب العربي منيرة متأججة لما رأيناها كادت تخبو وتخمد في المشرق نتيجة طغيان الشعوبية على الروح العربية الأصلية، أو بتأثير الدمار الذي لحق مراكز الحضارة بعد جحافل الفاتحين القساة من مغول وغير مغول...
وإننا لا نستطيع إلا أن نكبر ما قدمته بلاد المغرب من خدمة لأدب العرب عندما نجد أن الكثير ممن نفاخر الشعوب المتحضرة بهم هم من المغرب. أو نعرف أن للمغرب بين مراجعنا الكبرى للأدب والفكر مراجع صافية نقية لم تشبها الخرافة أو يلوثها التعصب الذميم، وفي رأس هذه المراجع آثار الحصري وابن رشيق وابن خلدون، ومن في مصافهم من العلماء الأفذاذ.
لقد قدر لنهضة الأدب العربي الحديثة أن تبدأ في بلاد المشرق، وعلى التحديد في لبنان وسوريا. وكان طبيعياً نتيجة ذلك أن يتركز النظر على أدب دمشق وبغداد في عصور ازدهارهما وما قبل هذه العصور، في جاهلية العرب. وهكذا أهمل الكثير من أدب بلاد المغرب، وكان ما وضع منه بين أيدي طلاب الأدب لا يفي بالحاجة ولا يغني الفضول. وقد اقتصر أكثره على لمحات عابرة لا تتعدى كثيراً أسماء بعض الأدباء البارزين وتاريخ مولدهم مع جهل أو إهمال لذكر مؤلفاتهم ومواضيعها وأهميتها.
والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يأتي لسد هذه الثغرة حيث قدم ترجمة لشخصيات أدبية ليست من المغرب فقط وإنما من المشرق أيضاً فقدم ترجمة لسيرة كل أديب، بعد ذلك قدم بين يدي الدراسة تحليلاً لشخصيته وأسلوبه وأهم مؤلفاته. وبداية قدم بحثاً عرض فيه لتاريخ الأدب العربي، فتتخذاً من بلاد العرب وحياة العرب الاجتماعية والاقتصادية للعرب منطلقاً لدراسته، بعد ذلك توقف عند خصائص العربية، أصل العربية...من ثم تحدث عن الانقلاب الإسلامي وأثره على الأدب العربي، العصر العباسي وأثره في الأدب العربي، وكمقدمة لمتن الكتاب والذي هو "الترجمة للشخصيات الأدبية" قدم الباحث تحليلاً لتاريخ الأدب في المغرب العربي فعرج على عصر الولاة، والفاطميون وبنو الأغلب... محلاً وباحثاً عن أثر هؤلاء في الأدب الأندلسي.
