يعدّ علم الفقه من العلوم الواجبة ومن العلوم التي تمسّ الحاجة إليها في المجتمع المسلم، وذلك لتوقف تمام نظام النوع عليه؛ وقد صنف فيه العلماء المتقدمون، والسلف الماضون كتباً متعددة مطولات، وأخرى مقتصرات، ولم يتركوا شيئاً مما يحتاج إليه من الفتوى والروايات.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب "شرائع الإسلام في مسائل الحلال والحرام" في هذا المجال، وقد حاز من الشهرة والرواج ما لم يتفق لكتاب في الفقه وتداولته أيدي الطلاب والمدرسين منذ عهد مؤلفه المتوفي سنة 676هـ إلى يومنا هذا، وقد وصف بأنه: (أفصح ما نهضت به أفهامهم، وأنقح ما جرت فيه أقلامهم... قد ضمنه جميع أصول الأحكام) وهو من تصنيف العلامة المحقق المدقق لشيخ نجم الدين جعفر بن الحسين الحلّي والمحقق الأول، الذي كان له الأثر الكبير في تطوير علم الفقه وتهذيبه وتبويبه.
وقد ضمن كتابه جميع أصول الاحكام المشتهرة عن الأئمة الكرام، مع إضافة الفروع اللطيفة، والتحقيقات الشريفة، بلفظ رائق حسن محرر؛ بهذا الشرح ونظراً لأهميته فقد تناوله الشراح بالشرح، ثم الإعتناء بهذا الشرح حيث عمل المحقق على بيان مبهمه ومشكلاته، وإبراز رموزه ونكاته، زيادة في الفائدة، ونفعاً للطالب والباحث.
وقد تمت مقابلة الكتاب على النسخ الأخرى التي جاء ذكرها في مقدمة الكتاب، ليثبت المحقق الراجح منه، والباقي أن احتمل وجهاً من الصواب قام بإيراد ذكره في الهامش مع الإشارة إلى نسخته، مقتصراً في التخريجات على مصادر الأدلة التي ذكرها الشارح من الآيات والروايات، دون الأقوال، سوى ما اضطربت فيه النسخ، ليرجعه إلى مصدره بعد ترتيب العبارة كما ينبغي أن تكون؛ وما نقله الشارح من روايات عن المتقدمين، ولم يوجه له ذكراً في المجاميع الروائية، وقد عمل المحقق على استخراج الروايات في كتاب وسائل الشيعة للشيخ الحر العاملي.
