ماذا نعرف عن الموسيقى، وكيف تستخرج الأصوات الجميلة التي نقول: إنها أصوات موسيقية... أو نغمات عذبة؟ فالأصوات أو النغمات تحدث بسبب اهتزاز أجسام، واصطدام هذا الاهتزاز بما حواليه من مجرى هوائي معين، أو جسم مجوف ناقل لهذه الاهتزازات بشكل صوت ذي نغمة معينة. ولو جربنا أن نمسك بمشط من النوع الذي نمشط به شعر رأسنا. ومررنا بالإبهام على نهايات أسنان المشط لاستمعنا إلى أصوات صادرة عن هذا المشط.
ولو قمنا التجربة نفسها مع وضع قاعدة المشط على صندوق خشب أو عليه معدنية، لوجدنا أن الصوت قد صار قوياً وواضحاً، ومعلوم أن الطبيعة هي المصدر الأول للأصوات وللرياح في حركتها والمياه في جريانها، والعصافير في زقزقتها... وهكذا.
وقد استطاع الإنسان والحيوان التمييز بين الصوت العذب والصوت المزعج، لكن الإنسان تمكن من الاستفادة من الطبيعة في صنع أدوات استعملها منذ القدم في حياته العامة. وكان من بينها أدوات استخرج منها الإنسان أصوانا ذات نغمات موسيقية طرب لها. هذه الأدوات التي استخرج الإنسان منها الأصوات والنغمات تطرق بالآلات الموسيقية وفي إطار التعريف بهذه الآلات تاريخها، تطور أشكالها، النغمات الصادرة عنها.
جاء هذا الكتاب والموجه أصلاً للفتيان حيث تستعرض صفحاته تاريخ الآلات الموسيقية الإيقاعية كالطبلة، والمزهر، والدف الزنجاري، والنقارة، والطبل، وكذلك يقدم الكتاب لمحة مختصرة تتحدث عن الآلات الموسيقية الشعبية كالناي والطبلة، والجلاجل والأجراس والصندج.
