لقد توفي الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم بعد أن بلغ رسالة ربه ونقل العرب من الشرك إلى الإسلام وجاهد بلسانه وسيفه حتى تمكن من تكوين أمة واحدة ودولة واحدة، ولم يغادر قومه إلا وقد وضع بين أيديهم رسالة سامية، لا تقتصر أهدافها على العرب وحدهم، وإنما تسعى إلى هداية الإنسانية جمعاء.
وبعد أن توفي الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، أدرك المسلمون أن صفة الرسالة أن النبوة قد انتهت بوفاته لأنه خاتم الأنبياء، وأن النبوة لا تورث، فتكون السلطة السياسية المنبثقة عنها هي الأخرى غير قابلة للوراثة، وتعود بوفاة شاغلها إلى أصحابها الأصليين، وهم أبناء الأمة ليختاروا من يولونه أمورهم السياسية طبقاً لما قررته الشريعة الإسلامية من أحكام، وما استقر في مجتمعهم من عرف وتقاليد تنسجم مع هذه الأحكام.
وهكذا جاء دور أصحاب الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، ليبدأ عصر جديد يسترشد بهدي المبادئ التي جاهد طويلاً من أجل ترسيخها في نفوسهم وعلى ربوع أرضهم التي شرفتها رسالة السماء.
لقد كان الحكم الراشدي سنوات من القيادة الحكيمة لمجتمع جديد في تطلعاته وتوسعاته وإحتكاكه بالحضارات المتاخمة، وكان حكماً رائداً لشعب مسلم يحتاج إلى رعاية حميمة من أصحاب رسول الدعوة الإسلامية، وإلى قيادة توصل فيه فضائل الحاكم المسلم، الذي يستمد فكره وسلوكه من القرآن الكريم وسنة نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم.
في هذا الكتاب، يتحدث المؤلف عن مرحلة الخلافة الراشدية مستعرضاً فترة حكم الخلفاء الراشدين مبتدأ بالحديث عن شخصية ونشأة الخليفة، ثم تحدث عن الفترة التي حكم فيها سارداً الأحداث والظروف التي رافقت حكمه، ليبين أن الحكم الراشدي قد ساهم في تشييد صرح حضارة عربية إسلامية زاهرة كان لها دورها المهم في الحضارة الإنسانية وتاريخ البشرية.
