المأسويّة، لغةً، نسبة غير قياسيّة إلى المأساة، والمأساة حادثة فاجعة تحمل على الأسى، ومسرحاً فهي، بحسب أرسطو في كتابه "فنّ الشعر": "محاكاة فعل نبيل... تثير الرحمة والخوف".
ومنذ القرن التاسع عشر عادت المأسويّة، وهي قَوام المأساة - التراجيديا وروحها، تحتلّ حيّزاً خطيراً فقي أدب الغرب وفكره، يتزايد يوماً بعد يوم حتّى إنّ لو كليزيو Le Clézio بالأمس القريب، سنة 2009، نسب أدبه إليها في خطاب حصوله على جائزة نوبل للآداب.
فالمأسويّة باقية ما بقي الإنسان على وضعه البشريّ، حيث إن مثلاً العنف الذي يهدّد حياة الإنسان لم تتراجع حدّته في أوائل القرن الواحد والعشرين، من حروب ضارية، وإضطهادات، وإحتلال، إلى شريعة الغاب في كلّ بقاع الأرض وخصوصاً في الشرق الأوسط، حيث تُنتهك حقوق الإنسان بإستمرار.
كلّ هذه الأوضاع تدفع الإنسان إلى الوعي المأسويّ، إلى اليقظة؛ وقد تأثّر كتّاب المسرح في العالم العربيّ بالمسرحيات المأسوية الغربية، فحاولوا ترجمة بعض النصوص، أو الإقتباس منها، أو النسج على منوالها، وقد استوحوا أحياناً الأساطير الشرقيّة، وأودعوا كتاباتهم رؤياهم المأسويّة.
ومأساة الإنسان اليوم، خصوصاً في الشرق العربيّ، أنّه يتعرّض يوميّاً لمحاولات تهميشه، أو عزله، أو سحقه، في دوائر فوضى النظم السياسيّة، وفي الخلل الحاصل لسلّم القيم.
لأمور المأسوية هذه وغيرها، سعى المؤلف إلى دراسة المأسوية في بعض المسرح العربيّ الحديث، ليكون عبارة عن نداء إلى المسرحيين العرب، وخصوصاً جيل الشباب منهم، وحتى يقبلوا أيضاً على كتابة المسرحية المأسوية ليعبروا عن مشاعرهم المأسوية في زمن المآسي التي تكال للعرب.
