وصف ابن النديم كتبا الأوراق في كتابه الفهرست فقال "انه لم يتم والذي خرج منه أخبار الخلفاء بأسرهم، وأشعار أولاد الخلفاء وأيامهم من السفاح إلى أيام ابن المعتز أشعار من يفي من بني العباس ممن ليس بخليفة ولا ابن خليفة لصلبه وأول ذلك شعر عبد الله بن علي، وآخره شعر أبي أحمد محمد بن إسماعيل بن إبراهيم بن عيسى بن المنصور، ويتلو ذلك أشعار الطالبين ولد الحسن الحسن والحسين وولد العباس بن علي وولد عمر بن علي وولد جعفر بن أبي طالب، ثم تلي ذلك أشعار ولد الحارث بن عبد المطلب، وبعده أخبار ابن هرمة الشاعر ومختار شعره، أخبار السيد الحميري ومختار شعره، أخبار أحمد بن يوسف ومختار شعره، أخبار سديف ومختاره". والمظنون أن هذا الكتاب يقع في خمسة أجزاء او شبه، والموجود منه الآن أربع مجلدات مفرقة في عدة مكاتب. وفي هذا الكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ القطعة الرابعة والأخيرة التي تم نشرها، رتب فيها الصولي الشعراء المحدثين على حسب بيوتاتهم وأسرهم، فقد ذكر بيت اللاجقين وبيت أشجع السلمي وبيت أحمد بن يوسف والقاسم بن صبيح. والمؤلف هو أبو بكر محمد بن عبد الله بنالعباس بن محمد بن صول تكين المعروف بالصولي. وهو أحد الفضلاء المشاهير العالمين بفنون الآدبا، المحاضرين بأخبار الملوك وأيام الخلفاء ومآثر الأشراف وطبقات لاشعراء, ويظهر أنه كان بخفض من العيش لكثرة ما كان يقدمه عليه الخلفاء والأمراء من القضايا والصلاة الفاخرة، وكان أحد المؤرخين العصريين حيد الحفظ الرواية لجدي الشعر وأخبار العلماء، والمؤرخون يعتمدون عليه في تدوين أخبار الخلفاء في عصره، وكان إلى ذلك لغوياً فقيهاً محدثاً شاعراً أدبياً عالماً بالقراءات والغناء وطروبه وأنواع الخطوط، وقد دون في كتاب أدب الكتاب قواعد للإملاء ومؤلفات الصولي كلها طريفة ينحو فيها منحى مؤلفي عصره، وتظهر فيها شخصيته الممتازة، وكثيراً ما يتحدث عن نفسه في كتاب الأوراق مدوناًُ أحواله مع الخلفاء ووزرائهم، واللصولي في الشعر مقدرة فائقة وقدم ثابتة، ويتخلل كتابه الأوراق قصائد ومقطعات له ومعظمها مدائح للخلفاء ووزرائهم وأمرائهم.
