من الكتب المهمة لمادتها ولمؤلفها في النحو "المفصل" للزمخشري، وقد تناوله العديد من العلماء النحويين بالشرح والنظم والاختصار والرد عليه وتصحيحاً لأخطائه، لكن شرح "ابن يعيش" انفرد بالشهرة بين العلماء، وذلك أن الشارح أقبل على المفصل، كما يقول في شرحه، وهو في سن السبعين، بعد أن نضج علماً، وترسخت قدمه في النحو والصرف، واصبح خبيراً بمذاهب البصريين والكوفيين والبغدادين. أما سبب تخصيصه كتاب "المفصل" بالشرح دون غيره من كتب النحاة، فلأن هذا الكتاب، كما يذكر في مقدمة شرحه، جليل القدر نابه الذكر إلا إن فيه ألفاظاً أشكلت، وعبارات مجملة، ومعان خالية من الدليل.
يتلخص منهج "ابن يعيش" من شرحه أنه تابع الزمخشري في مفصله فصلاً فصلاً، وفقرة فقرة، من أول الكتاب إلى آخره. فكان يُثبت كلام الزمخشري بحسب تقسيمات الزمخشري نفسه لهذا الكلام، ثم يتبعه بالشرح والتفصيل، والنقد، متوسعاً في شرحه، عارضاً لآراء النحويين المختلفة في المسألة الواحدة، حتى جاء شرحه أشبه بدائرة معارف لآراء النحويين في اختلاف مدارسهم. والقارئ لهذا الشرح يظهر له منذ الصفحات الأولى شدة حماسة "ابن يعيش" للبصريين وانتصاره لهم، موهناً آراء الكوفيين ومن وافقهم، مكثراً من الاستشهاد بسيبوية حتى كاد أن يستنفذ آراءه، وهو في شرحه يستشهد بالكثير من الآيات القرآنية، والقراءات، والشواهد الشعرية، كما استشهد بالأحاديث النبوية، والأمثال، والأقوال. وكان يشرح ما يجده صعباً من الألفاظ، وينسب الأبيات الشعرية التي لم ينسبها الزمخشري، ويبين مواضع الاستشهاد فيها، إلى عرض آراء مختلفة في المسألة الواحدة ثم مناقشتها.
وفي الجملة، جاء الشرح محققاً غايته، مستوفياً شروطه، حتى قال ابن خلكان: "ليس في جملة الشروح مثله".
إنما يميز هذه الطبعة التي نقلب صفحاتها وأنها قد جاءت مزيلة بكتاب خاص للفهارس الفنية حيث اهتم فيه المحقق بعمل فهارس للآيات الكريمة والأحاديث الشريفة وأقوال العرب والأعلام والأمثال وللغات واللهجات والشعر والرجز.
