إن التجارة الدولية هي الجزء المكون الرئيسي من العلاقات الإقتصادية الدولية، إنها الشكل التقليدي الأقدم والأكثر تطوراً لهذه العلاقات، وهي تشكل مقدمة، وفي الوقت نفسه نتيجة للتقسيم الدولي للعمل، حولها تتمحور جميع أشكال التقسيم الدولي للعمل، وهي ترتبط جميع بلدان العالم في منظومة إقتصادية دولية موحدة، وتشهد العقود الأخيرة تعزز وتأثر نموها، وتحولات جذرية في ديناميتها وبنيتها، وفي طبيعة وإتجاهات التبادل التجاري الدولي.
ففي ظروف الثورة العلمية التكنولوجية وثورة المعلوماتية وتكنولوجيا الإتصالات ونشوء إقتصاد المعرفة، يكتسب التبادل التجاري الدولي أهمية ومتزايدة، ويتخذ أشكالاً وأساليب جديدة لم تكن معروفة من قبل.
