"سلوة الغريب وأسوة الأريب" كتاب معروف في الأوساط الأدبية كمصدر أدبي مهم، وضعه مؤلفه "ابن معصوم المدني" وهو حدث لم يتجاوز الرابعة عشرة من عمره يوم غادر موطنه الحجاز مع عائلة والده ميمماً شطر الهند ترافقه بعثه شرف يرأسها وزير من حيدر آباد الركن، وقد استغرقت رحلته هذه إلى أن وصل إلى أبيه تسعة عشر شهراً، دون خلالها كل ما وقعت عليه عينه في البر والبحر.
وإلى أن اشتد ساعده واستوى شرع سنة 1074هـ في تأليف هذه الرحلة فوصف المدن والقرى والسكان، والمناخ والماء والهواء، والجبال والأشجار والثمار والحيوان، والمساجد ومراقد العلماء، وترجم لبعضهم، ووصف البحار وما فيها من حيوان وأحجار كريمة وغرائب. فنمّق كل ذلك ووشاه مما عرف عنه من القدرة على الاستطرادات الأدبية الرائعة، والاستدراكات العلمية المفيدة، وأورد الكثير من الشواهد المختارة نظماً ونثراً، ثم انهى الرحلة وبإيراد نماذج من شعر والده، وما يناسبها من أقوال لشعراء آخرين.
وبعدها ترجم للسلطان عبد الله بن محمد قطب شاه سلطان حيدر آباد، ثم ترجم لجماعة من علماء العصر وأدبائه الذين التقى بهم في مجلس والده، وأورد لبعضهم نماذج جيدة من الشعر، وهو في أثناء ذلك يورد الشواهد الشعرية الرائقة والحكايات الطريفة المسلية،والنقد المؤيد بالحقائق العلمية، ثم أتى بعد ذلك بفصل ذكر فيه جملة من أخبار الهند وأحوالها قديماً وحديثاً، وكان مسك الختام طائفة مختارة من الشعر لجماعة من الشعراء كان هو نسفه أخرهم. ولأهمية هذه الرحلة اعتنى "شاكر هادي شكر" بتحقيق متنها الوارد في هذا الكتاب تحقيقاً يبين ما غمض من عباراتها وما لبس من معانيها، كما واعتنى بإيضاح أسماء الأعلام من الرجال الموارد ذكرهم في الكتاب، وبذكر تواريخ وفاتهم، مشيداً إلى مصادر تراجمهم.
